Encyclopedias say that shungite is a mineral formation containing amorphous carbon; used as filler in light concretes – and that, according to books, its’ the only effective feature. However, that is only a minor of many areas, where this unique material can be applied.

Below a brief description of the main features of Taurit – the brand name for shungite products of Koksu Mining Company:

  • Nonflammable;
  • Chemically stable towards mineral acids and most solvents;
  • Stable to light exposure;
  • Does not cake when stored;
  • Not hydroscopic;
  • Nontoxic;
  • Radiation safe;
  • Thermostable;
  • Prevents corrosion.

These and other features open up a wide range of applications for Taurit in various industries.

Taurit can, wholly or partially, replace carbon black, white black, kaolin and other compounds of rubber blends in the process of production of car tires and inner tubes, conveyors, packing glands, compressors, etc. At that the product characteristics do not deteriorate and even get better. Working conditions become more comfortable, since Taurit powder generates less dust than soot.

High chemical stability, water repellence and plasticizing capability of the mineral allow its application in production of various construction materials – bricks, tiles, soft roofing and bituminous concrete. As nonflammable filler it is perfect for dressing, replacing costly graphite in metallurgy. High quality paints based on Taurit with damp-proof features can be used for river boats and sea vessels.

Taurit has promising perspectives in the production of polymer composite materials and elastomers. Depending on the area of application the filling rate varies from 5 to 70% thereby lowering the cost of the product.
